The Z-Word: Re-imagining Zionism
In memory of Avi Schaefer Z"L
January 22nd 2012
The Avi Schaefer Fund would like to invite you to attend the 2012 Jerusalem Symposium, which will give Young-Adults spending time in Israel the unique opportunity to learn about and debate Zionism’s enduring relevance. The Symposium will be held at the Hadassah Academic College in downtown Jerusalem, 37 HaNevi'im Street, from 3:00-9:30 PM.
The Symposium will be held in memory of Avi Schaefer Z"L, whose passion for Israel and peace inspired a new model for advocating for Israel on the North American campus. Avi, an IDF veteran and Brown University student, was killed by a drunk driver on February 12th, 2010 while walking near campus. If you would like to learn more about Avi's story, or about the The Avi Schaefer Fund, please visit our website at www.avischaeferfund.org.
The Symposium, which will center around the subject of contemporary Zionism, will stand participants before challenging questions: Is Zionism relevant in our times and Why be a Zionist today? The design of the Symposium will challenge participants on both philosophical and practical levels.
If you have any questions please email Bernstein.ee@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing you in January.

The Avi Schaefer Fund
The AVI SCHAEFER FUND (ASF) is dedicated to changing the climate of the Israeli-Palestinian discussion on North American college campuses. The ASF believes there is no contradiction between supporting Israel and the pursuit of honest conversation and peace. The ASF will develop venues in which students with divergent views can respectfully engage and listen to each others’ narratives, fostering the understanding of each others’ humanity.
The Avi Schaefer Fund has been created to continue Avi’s work as a “soldier of peace.” Avi was involved in a variety of projects aimed at working toward peace between Israelis and Palestinians. His passion stemmed from a deep, abiding love for the Jewish people and a commitment to the safety and security of the State of Israel. Avi believed deeply in the idea that a true and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians is critical to ensure the security of both Israel and Jews around the world. The Fund will be guided by Avi’s core values of compassion, an open heart, a generous spirit, and mutual respect, as well as by the ability to listen deeply as it develops and supports projects that work toward the fulfillment of Avi’s dream of peace.
